Chinese New Year

Last Friday students and staff celebrated Chinese New Year which took place on the 17th February 2026 during our half-term. The event was a wonderful opportunity for pupils to experience elements of Chinese culture through food, discussion and interactive activities.

During the session, pupils explored the traditions associated with Chinese New Year, including learning about red envelopes (hongbao) and their cultural meaning. Staff also took part in a quiz about Chinese traditions and cultures which they shared with students through discussions during our whole school meal.

Pupils had the opportunity to try new foods, including the very unique pineapple cake, a variety of Chinese sauces and dips, and a selection of dumplings. They approached the activity with curiosity, respect and enthusiasm, demonstrating a genuine interest in learning about a culture different from their own.

Pupils learned about Chinese traditions, customs and cultural symbols, developing respect for diversity and global cultural practices.

Pupils were encouraged to try new foods, express preferences, and build confidence in exploring unfamiliar experiences.

Through quizzes and discussions, pupils made connections between cultural symbolism, celebrations, and storytelling, demonstrating creativity and problem-solving.

Pupils applied listening, reasoning and recall skills during the quiz and discussions, showing curiosity and a desire to deepen their understanding.

Overall, the celebration was highly successful, and the pupils demonstrated excellent engagement, curiosity and respect throughout.
